Featured Design of the Month: September 2022

Image Title: Event Horizon

In honor of the first images sent back from the James Webb Telescope, I chose my version of the cosmic phenomena known as an Event Horizon as the Featured Design for September 2022.   Although this image pales in comparison to the astonishing and awe-inspiring images from the James Webb Telescope, it does offer some interesting visuals and optical illusions.  Stare into the dark center of the sphere for one minute and you will see what I mean!

An Event Horizon is defined as the point at which the gravitational pull becomes so great as to make escape impossible. The dark blue and light blue lines draw the eye to the center which acts like a visual gravitational pull toward the light blue fog lingering in the sphere (representing the Black Hole). The thin white line surrounding the sphere appears to be an event horizon commonly associated with black holes.

This image creates two optical illusions. The first illusion is the 'warping' of the straight lines as they converge on the outer edge of the sphere. The second illusion is the depth and perspective of the lines make the blue fog in the center appear to morph and move within the sphere. When you stare at the blue fog within the orb, it appears to hover and dance around within the sphere. Then, keep staring at the grey-black smudge in the center of the fog and it will seem to morph into different shapes.
